
{"id":5674,"date":"2013-07-02T00:00:20","date_gmt":"2013-07-02T04:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/home\/?p=5674"},"modified":"2013-07-02T09:22:15","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T13:22:15","slug":"king-of-the-lonely-hill-and-never-in-stone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/index.php\/king-of-the-lonely-hill-and-never-in-stone\/","title":{"rendered":"King of the Lonely Hill and Never in Stone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/home\/index.php\/king-of-the-lonely-hill-and-never-in-stone\/lonely_hill_585x585\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5764\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5764\" alt=\"Lonely_Hill_585x585\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Lonely_Hill_585x585.jpg\" width=\"585\" height=\"585\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Lonely_Hill_585x585.jpg 585w, http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Lonely_Hill_585x585-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Lonely_Hill_585x585-580x580.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>King of the Lonely Hill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brilliant eyes flashed in darkness.\u00a0 Haunted words touched pale lips.\u00a0 Heroic features mirrored the legends in time.\u00a0 Conspiracy whispered across strong, metal frames.\u00a0 Flaws etched across glass, but the glass would not break.\u00a0 A space rested against the long, long wall, awaiting my presence, and I was ready, ready for my destiny.<\/p>\n<p>The long hall stretched out before me.\u00a0 I walked upward, noting the heroes to my left and to my right.\u00a0 I would become one of them, and I continued moving up, up to where I should be.\u00a0 I would get there.\u00a0 I was almost there, and I would never look back.\u00a0 Why should I?\u00a0 My destiny was almost at hand.<\/p>\n<p>The phones rang somewhere in the distance.\u00a0 I hardly noticed them, but the ringing would not be silenced.\u00a0 Strange, but I had those to come to my side, assist me in my goal, and keep me moving upward.\u00a0 Why weren\u2019t they answering the phones?\u00a0 Where have they all gone?\u00a0 I started to turn around, but then fear struck me.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t afford to go back down.<\/p>\n<p>Still, an eerie silence now filled me.\u00a0 The phones were quiet.\u00a0 The hall was quiet.\u00a0 Where were my bustling bees?\u00a0 Why were they not doing my bidding?\u00a0 I should go and check on them.\u00a0 I should turn around, but then that fear is waiting to bite into me again.\u00a0 Why should I be afraid?\u00a0 I can turn around for a moment, go back down, and then come back up.\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing stopping me from going back up, up to the highest level, where the white throne awaits me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.\u00a0 What I saw threw an icy pick into my heart.\u00a0 There was nothing.\u00a0 It was like staring into a black hole.\u00a0 Everything was gone.\u00a0 Everyone was gone.\u00a0 All I had left was the part of the hall that I remained in.\u00a0 There was no going back down.\u00a0 There was only going back up, moving as fast as I could before the darkness swallowed me.\u00a0 And it would swallow me just like the men that came before me.<\/p>\n<p>I moved upward quickly.\u00a0 Those men on the wall smiled at me, knowing my fate.\u00a0 How could they betray me?\u00a0 I was to become another great man.\u00a0 I changed this city for the better.\u00a0 I made it my own.\u00a0 How could anyone betray me, but then I realized the truth.\u00a0 I betrayed myself, and the darkness followed.<\/p>\n<p>I made it to the top of the hill.\u00a0 The white throne waited for me.\u00a0 Just sit down in the chair and claim its power, I said to myself.\u00a0 The world will return for you.\u00a0 The world needs you, so I sat down in that chair.\u00a0 And the world did not come back.<\/p>\n<p>The darkness grew closer.\u00a0 The great men were gone.\u00a0 The long hall was gone.\u00a0 There was nothing, no one to help me.\u00a0 I did this to myself.\u00a0 I paved the road with good intentions, but we all know where that road leads.\u00a0 And here I am.\u00a0 I am king, but I am now king of the lonely hill.\u00a0 And the world has forgotten about me.\u00a0 They just won\u2019t forget the damage that I\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Never in Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The future is never written in stone. I tell myself that every day, but I still seem to find the feet of yesterday, wandering aimlessly. Nothing has changed, but the world is different. My life remains out of reach, and I am the ghost in the crowd. My voice is carried by the wind, and the pen is crying. The door is open, but I still remain half inside, thinking my life is set in stone. I will never live the dream, but to believe that is to surrender. And the future is never written in stone.
