
{"id":7364,"date":"2014-10-06T11:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-10-06T15:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/home\/?p=7364"},"modified":"2015-06-16T13:17:26","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T17:17:26","slug":"twisted-and-baby-blues-apologia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/index.php\/twisted-and-baby-blues-apologia\/","title":{"rendered":"Twisted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/twisted.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8090\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/twisted-580x580.jpg\" alt=\"twisted\" width=\"580\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/twisted-580x580.jpg 580w, http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/twisted-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/twisted.jpg 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Twisted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some don&#8217;t like poetry that&#8217;s hard, dense like a Roman wall.<\/p>\n<p>Others had to learn ways through that wall, so here I am<\/p>\n<p>needing strange poetry to explain how I taste sound.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My way of hearing the world was always derided<\/p>\n<p>by people who trampled the music that fed me,<\/p>\n<p>the soft leaves and singing of the woods<\/p>\n<p>that wrapped around me when all was lost.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Noisier, hotter engines invade the waters<\/p>\n<p>in inner ears now; but some don&#8217;t care.<\/p>\n<p>Any quiet places left for a Thorough saunterer?<\/p>\n<p>Arctic glaciers are melting for brute gluttons.<\/p>\n<p>My compacted wisdom narwhal tooth, does it bite?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For non-synesthetes, you will have to just imagine.<\/p>\n<p>As you tell yourself to reach for the synaptic rope,<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s already a mere sign, a broken link to what&#8217;s real,<\/p>\n<p>because you had to run it past the left hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I let the strings travel in crooked paths as needed.<\/p>\n<p>Designs appear, scents-tastes-textures blend.<\/p>\n<p>If uninterrupted a while, a sweet fullness grows<\/p>\n<p>and I stop starving; breathing isn&#8217;t labored.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some would prefer Eco&#8217;s Labyrinth with<\/p>\n<p>clearer signs to make it easy to find the exit,<\/p>\n<p>or the interlaced Beowulf to be straightened out.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t they know nature? The oldest tree is twisted.<\/p>\n<p>The narwhal&#8217;s tooth is twisted to break through the ice.<\/p>\n<p>Some never had to clench their fists on a rope<\/p>\n<p>to climb up to avoid a fall, to not drown.<\/p>\n<p>The rope fibers held, always held<\/p>\n<p>because they were twisted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">Lloyd Milburn teaches creative writing, literature, and composition in colleges in upstate New York where he earned a creative writing MA.
