Vigilante<\/h3>\n

Pardon me for attempting to be
\nsome kind of hero or otherwise
\nsavior figure.\u00a0 My mistake.
\nPardon the garish appearance
\nof the costume I crafted (it was
\na last minute low budget choice)
\nand pardon my lack of sophisticated
\nintelligence, weaponry, or astounding
\nmartial arts skills.\u00a0 I am just a guy
\nwho used to read comics, wanted to be
\nsomebody\u2019s emblem, and now find
\nthe feeling of this cape rather awkward.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Boxers<\/h3>\n

The boxers lean heavily on one
\nanother like two sagging towers.
\nMy father\u2019s face is red with frustration
\nand also leans forward, hand poised
\non his knee, a glass of buttermilk close
\nby (how does he drink it?).
\nFrom the kitchen, my mother complains
\nabout fighting.\u00a0 She wants him to let me
\nwatch cartoons.\u00a0 But there are not cartoons
\non anymore.\u00a0 Sometimes
\nthe fighters jump like those hopping beans
\nin the check-out line, which I never see
\nanymore.\u00a0 They dodge and parry and thrust
\nlike living swords.\u00a0 But this fight is slow
\nand bloated, the gloves seem heavier, eyes
\nseem thicker, but the crowd seems unfazed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My Favorite Character<\/h3>\n

My favorite character died today
\nand it happened on the very last page.
\nSadistic author.
\nThe entire novel had been leading up
\nto a contented crescendo, every scrap
\nof plot a smiling, polite face,
\nand now I see the fallen form, lying
\nwounded from the quill.\u00a0 Well,
\nthe keyboard, at least.
\nThe tombstone will read:
\nHe died to the sound of tapping keys.
\nNow I must either give up reading
\n(which seems unlikely) or go about
\nthe business of finding another fictitious
\nperson to spend some time with.
\nAnother faceless face to observe,
\nanother mouth that sounds like my own.<\/p>\n
