
{"id":997,"date":"2011-06-28T11:42:09","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T15:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gadflyonline.com\/wpblog\/?p=997"},"modified":"2012-07-15T20:12:32","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T00:12:32","slug":"american-economics-by-michael-patrick-mcsweeney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gadflyonline.com\/home\/index.php\/american-economics-by-michael-patrick-mcsweeney\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;American Economics&#8221; by Michael Patrick McSweeney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>right now the economy is in the sun room<br \/>\nwatching mother robins build their nests<br \/>\n&amp; balance twigs between their beaks.<br \/>\nthe doctor just left us silent in the kitchen<br \/>\ncoffee mugs cold from neglect<br \/>\n&amp; our hands slide across the table<br \/>\nleaving sweat-garlands beside our cell-phones.<\/p>\n<p>no one wants to kneel beside the wicker chair,<br \/>\ndeliver the news, no one wants to close the ivory<br \/>\nblinds across the dusty window.<br \/>\nno one wants to tell the economy it&#8217;s going to die.<\/p>\n<p>II.<\/p>\n<p>just after dawn &amp; no sleep I shower,<br \/>\n&amp; drying myself notice blood splashes<br \/>\ntrying to crawl towards the drain<br \/>\nof the faux-porcelain sink.<br \/>\na newspaper&#8217;s ashes huddle by the toilet,<br \/>\nheadlines fighting for attention<br \/>\ntheir voices curled around some unformed center.<\/p>\n<p>III.<\/p>\n<p>the stock market stops by to see the economy<br \/>\nbut spends his visit in the TV room<br \/>\nadmiring the wall-mounted flat screen.<br \/>\nhe whistles undulating melodies, his long white fingers<br \/>\nclick through our local magazines<br \/>\n&amp; replies when we speak with facts about himself.<\/p>\n<p>after he leaves my wife brings the economy chicken soup<br \/>\nwith the noodles cut&#8211;she says they can be swallowed faster<br \/>\nthat way&#8211;&amp; allows the fan in the bedroom to keep whirling<br \/>\nunder the weight of shed hair &amp; skin from long ago.<br \/>\na few hours later I find the economy slumped<br \/>\nover the side of the bed,<br \/>\nspewing broth onto the carpet<br \/>\n&amp; staring up at me<br \/>\nlike a child confused by the concept of God.<\/p>\n<p>IV.<\/p>\n<p>the doctor shows us x-rays depicting growth,<br \/>\ncharts of numbers running up stairs. he says it&#8217;s a sign.<br \/>\nI ask if there is anything inspirational I could say<br \/>\n&amp; his eyes flicker away like a spent match.<br \/>\nhis mouth mumbles something<br \/>\nabout how life is like that Walt Whitman poem&#8230;<br \/>\nback home we find the economy in the kitchen,<br \/>\nkneading coffee grounds with shaking palms.<br \/>\n<em>I just needed a little juice<\/em>, we hear.<br \/>\nmy wife takes my hand &amp; begins to cry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>About the Poet<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>Michael Patrick McSweeney is an artist and educator from the Boston region.
