Drama’s “A Never Ending Story” Album Review

Hundreds of young men aspire to be like the rappers and recording artists they look up to. Many dreamers try to make their dream a reality and begin recording music and sharing it through social media and on the streets. In New York City, the streets are covered with aspiring artists and musicians. Drama is one musician aspiring to be heard, and distributing his album “A Never Ending Story- Chapter 1” in downtown New York City.

With so many rappers and singers trying to make it big in the music industry, it can be difficult to sort out which are legitimate and which should ‘keep their day jobs’. SquareFree, starring Drama has much more to offer than I would expect from a street-vended CD.

There are so many aspects to a successful rap song. Amateur rappers struggle to meet the multidimensional standards. The beat, added sound effects, singing, rapping, lyrics, flow and technological adjustments like the synthesizer, all must be blended perfectly together. Many times an amateur rapper can do one aspect very well, but struggles with other aspects. I found the versatility of Drama both satisfying and rare.

Drama offers a bit of everything. Each track has a solid beat with sound effects that are fitting to the flow of the song. Soft R&B-like singing compliments the rap verses very nicely. The rapping voice is smooth with a bit of rasp. The most impressive aspect of Drama is the delivery. The most common problem that I have seen among amateur rappers is fitting words to fit the rhythm. All too often, rappers spit out a word faster than usual just so the lyric fits the beat.  This disruption in flow is uncomfortable for the listener, but all too common in amateur rap. Drama’s album, “A Never Ending Story- Chapter 1”, flows comfortably with very little disruption.

Of the twelve songs on the new album, only one is poorly recorded, offbeat and off-pitch. The other eleven songs are high quality, unique, diverse and well-worth listening to if you appreciate up and coming hip hop. Drama has all the tools to be great: a good rapping voice, good singing voice, rhythm, beats and fantastic delivery. This album is chapter one. Considering Drama’s multidimensionality, keep your eyes peeled around Times Square for chapter 2.
